Finding Mountain Bike Riding Companions: A Guide for Adventurers

Mountain biking is not just a sport; it’s an exhilarating adventure that allows you to explore nature’s wonders while pushing your limits. In my last post, I discussed some of the benefits of riding in groups. After-all, hitting the trails alone can sometimes lack the thrill of sharing the experience with like-minded enthusiasts. Riding with companions not only enhances safety but also adds a social dimension to your biking escapades. If you’re eager to find fellow mountain bike enthusiasts to join you on your rides, here are some strategies to help you connect with riding companions:

  1. Online Forums and Social Media: This is like a no-brainer in today’s world, aren’t you reading my blog post? The internet offers a plethora of platforms where mountain bikers gather to share experiences, tips, and organize rides. Websites like MTBR.com, Pinkbike.com, and Meetup.com host forums where riders discuss everything from gear, trail conditions and local rides. Additionally, social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have groups and pages dedicated to local biking communities. Join these groups, introduce yourself, and express your interest in finding others to ride with. You’ll likely find plenty of fellow riders eager to welcome you into their fold.

For me, I was reading the forum of my regional mountain bike organization, CLIMB , Concerned Long Island Mountain Bikers.  I spent the few bucks that it costs to become a member (it goes a long way in preserving and expanding the trails in my region- wherever you are – join your local organization) and went on an introductory ride.  At this ride event I was asked to join a bunch of people in a message group, where I made my first mountain bike friends.

With that success, I went to the organizations monthly barbeque ride. BAM! That changed everything, a bunch of riders that also liked to hang out, share some food and drink – now we’re talking.

Fast forward a couple of years and I now belong to several Facebook and message groups with a bunch of awesome people.  If I want to ride with others, I look to see if a ride is posted in one of the groups, if not, I post a ride, and someone almost always shows up.

  1. Trailhead Encounters: Sometimes, your next riding buddy may be just a trail away. Strike up conversations with fellow riders at trailheads or parking lots before or after your rides. If they seem to be of similar skill level or a little better, don’t hesitate to ask if you can join them on their ride or if they’re aware of any group rides or clubs in the area. Don’t get over your head with a fast group if you are a beginner, no one will enjoy that ride and you will not be invited to ride with them again (I’m not supposed to say that, but let’s face it, that’s the reality). If you’re shy, sharing a passion for mountain biking is an excellent icebreaker and will offer instant comradery.
  2. Local Bike Shops: Local bike shops are often hubs for the cycling community. Visit nearby bike stores and inquire about group rides or clubs they may organize or sponsor. Many shops host regular rides catering to various skill levels. Joining these group rides not only introduces you to potential riding buddies but also allows you to tap into valuable local knowledge about the best trails in the area.
  3. Ask Friends and Family: Don’t overlook the possibility that friends or family members might share your interest in mountain biking or know someone who does. Reach out to your social circle and let them know you’re looking for riding companions. You might be surprised to find out that someone you already know is an avid mountain biker or knows someone who is.

Finding mountain bike riding companions is all about reaching out, connecting with the cycling community, and being open to new experiences. Whether you’re exploring local trails or embarking on epic adventures, having companions by your side enhances the joy of mountain biking and ensures that every ride is an unforgettable experience. So don’t hesitate to put yourself out there, join groups, strike up conversations, and before you know it, you’ll have a crew of riding buddies to share your passion for mountain biking with.
