Mountain biking the snowy Zen. Fat biking in the snow offers a thrilling and rewarding adventure for outdoor enthusiasts. As the winter months cloak the landscape in a blanket of snow, many mountain bikers stow away their bikes, assuming their adventures must be put on hold until spring’s thaw. However, for a dedicated group of fat tire riders, the snowy season signals the start of a unique and exhilarating experience: fat biking in the snow.
Recently, nature offered its soul and bared its winter glory. For me, getting out and riding during a snowstorm is a majestic experience where nature’s beauty absorbs you into its quiet serenity and black and white pallet. As the storm intensified, the schools were closed, businesses closed and children played, I loaded up my Jeep Wrangler with my bike and gear, then headed for the trailhead.
As I began my fat biking journey, 3” of heavy, wet snow blanketed the ground, the tree branches and bark were wearing their white coats and the trail was seen as a path into the unknown, no tracks of bike, people nor animals. First tracks! This is the most special ride of all. The perception that no one has been here before adds to the mystic of the ride, although it also increases the effort required to pedal through virgin snow.
My Trek Farley, fitted with 4.5”x27.5” Bontrager studded Gnarwals held firm grip as I forged along. Branches were hanging down into the trail, dumping mounds of snow as I rode through them. It wasn’t long for me to be covered in snow, my helmet, brakes, gear levers and cassette. There was no sound except for the crunching snow under my tires and the occasional crack of a breaking branch. The deer were not happy to see me as they thought they would have the forest to themselves for the day. The snow kept falling, getting deeper with each mile traveled.
As the snow approached 6”, it was getting tough to pedal through and now full trees were hanging down into the trail. They were too big to go through and it was necessary to stop and shake the snow off so they could rise to their normal height. The trail ahead would have many more branches and bushes in the path of travel, so I decided to play it safe and head back to the trail head, calling it a day. One of the best rides EVER.
Mountain biking the snowy Zen presents a myriad of challenges not encountered during warmer seasons. The terrain, once familiar and predictable, transforms into a slippery, unpredictable landscape. We must navigate through deep drifts, icy patches, and slushy trails, constantly adjusting their technique to maintain balance and control. Yet, it is precisely these challenges that draws us to the snowy trails, offering a thrilling and rewarding experience unlike any other.
Snowy conditions demand a unique set of skills from mountain bikers. Riding in the snow requires heightened focus, precise maneuvering, and quick reflexes to navigate through the unpredictable terrain. We must master the art of weight distribution, leaning into turns and adjusting our body position to maintain traction on the slippery surface. Additionally, the physical demands of biking in the snow are considerable, requiring increased strength and endurance to power through the resistance of the snow and maintain momentum on the trails.
Proper gear and clothing are essential for both safety and enjoyment of winter fat biking. Fat bikes, with their wide tires and low tire pressure, are particularly well-suited for riding in the snow, offering enhanced stability and flotation over soft terrain. In addition, studded tires offer an increased grip on icy surfaces. Riders must also dress appropriately for the cold, layering up to stay warm while ensuring breathability to prevent overheating during exertion. Additionally, accessories such as goggles, gloves, and shoe covers or winter boots help protect against the elements and maintain comfort during the ride. I prefer to use flat pedals, there are many times you may want to drop a foot to maintain balance and they also work well with most winter boots.
The serene beauty of snow-covered landscapes, the crisp, clean air, and the quiet solitude of the trails create an immersive and rejuvenating experience. Fat biking through snowy forests and across frozen landscapes, we gain a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the seasonal rhythms that shape it.
Mountain biking the snowy Zen bring upon several safety issues. While mountain biking in the snow can be an exhilarating adventure, it is essential to prioritize safety at all times.
