Tick and Mosquito protection. If you’ve ever pedaled deep into the woods only to be swarmed by mosquitoes the size of helicopters, you know the pain of trying to enjoy your ride while getting eaten alive. For mountain bikers, especially those who ride trails in humid, wooded, or swampy areas, bug spray isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s survival gear. That’s where Deep Woods Off! steps in.
After years of riding across buggy singletrack, backcountry fire roads, and dense forest routes, I can confidently say that Deep Woods Off! is a reliable companion when it comes to keeping the bugs at bay — and letting you enjoy the ride.
Protection That Lasts
One of the most impressive features of Deep Woods Off! is its long-lasting tick and mosquito protection. The version I used contains 25% DEET, which is strong enough to ward off mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, gnats, chiggers, and no-see-ums. On long rides — even those stretching into the multi hour range — I rarely had to reapply.
Tick and mosquito protection is a constant concern for mountain bikers, and I was surprised by how well Deep Woods Off! held up with all the sweating. Whether climbing exposed ridgelines or bombing through overgrown switchbacks, the protection didn’t break down like cheaper sprays often do. I didn’t experience the usual “mosquito cloud” that tends to reappear when a repellent fades. Even when I was drenched in sweat, the stuff kept working.

Application and Feel
Deep Woods Off! comes in both aerosol and pump spray options. I prefer the aerosol for ease of use — it provides even coverage, especially when you’re spraying over legs, arms, neck, and back-of-the-knees in a hurry before hitting the trail. And don’t forget the shoes and socks! It dries quickly and doesn’t leave an overly greasy residue like some other repellents.
Scent
Let’s talk smell. Deep Woods Off! does have that classic bug spray aroma, but it’s not overpowering. It dissipates pretty fast, so you won’t feel like you’re riding through the woods in a chemical cloud. The scent doesn’t cling to your gear either — I’ve sprayed it while wearing my hydration pack and didn’t notice any lingering odor on the fabric later on.
Effectiveness Against Ticks
For those of us who ride in tick-heavy zones — think East Coast or Midwest U.S. trails — this stuff really shines. I’ve pulled off plenty of ticks in the past, but on days when I remembered to apply Deep Woods Off!, I didn’t find any on me post-ride. Ticks are a serious concern for bikers cutting through grassy trails or resting in the woods, and Deep Woods Off! offers legit peace of mind in that regard.
